One year after Richard signed with Alabama in 1966, younger brother Jim followed him to Tuscaloosa.

It is a memory that Jim Grammer didn’t fully appreciate at the time. He was young. He had a lifetime ahead of him. And, frankly, he was just too busy trying to do his job for the feeling to sink in.

But for numerous plays during Alabama’s 1969 football season, Jim Grammer lined up on the offensive line alongside his older brother. Richard, a senior, played center. Jim, a redshirt sophomore, played guard.

There they were, the Grammer boys from Hartselle, playing together again, just like they had at Morgan County High School a few seasons before. And this time, it was for Coach Paul “Bear“ Bryant and the Alabama Crimson Tide.

“I just wonder, in the history of college football, how many times two brothers lined up side by side,“ Jim Grammer asks today.
